sut ti na!!
aiseh, so sleepy today. so embarrassing earlier. was coming into the building when I walked into the release railing of a door. no lah, not right smack into the door. I opened the door too narrowly, such that my hip hit the release bar when I walked in because it juts out. so damn painful. the embarassing thing was that someone was standing there. she turned away without a word to face the elevator. my guess is she was trying to stop herself from laughing at me. it was pretty loud you know, and it hurt like hell. I was like ow ow ow.... she was like.... no response. she should have laughed a little or uttered some wisecrack. but no, she just studied her toes. aiseh, pretending that nothing happened made it all the more embarassing. cheh!
anyway my blooming bruise reminds me of what massachussetts is trying to do. pass a bill barring corporal punishment. sounds scary hor? something like no slapping or spanking of kids under 18. then over 18 how? apparently it is ok to whack your kids if they are over 18 since they can punch back. or maybe sue you. anyway, this all started when brookline, you know the kiasu, snobby brookline is like little singapore here, decided to discourage spanking. aiseh. because.... because it has been shown that spanked kids suffer long term consequences --- anti-social behaviour! wth?!! I guess that is why I'm so anti-social lah. actually I can probably attribute this blog to being spanked when little. spanking caused me to repress my thoughts and only now have I been saved by discovering blogging. I'm also very shy because I was spanked... give me a break!
hmm... a lot of my friends and relatives were spanked. quite common in malaysia mah! not sure if it is still the case these days. like russell peter's - 'somebody gonna get a hurt real bad!!' (rp is damn funny). we have the phrases 'sut ti na' or 'jiak ti na' or 'makan rotan' for being caned. my parents didn't use some walking stick to cane us ok! the terror sisters were caned using flexible ratan. ok, one shouldn't google for rattan canes. thought I could get a photo of a cane but was flooded with bdsm sites. now I've been scarred!! anyway, the point was we were of course scared of the cane as pain is still pain. even though the pain from the cane was temporary and not all that bad. I've seen so many horrid brats that of course have not been spanked. I would love to land a few switches of the cane on them.
of course there has to be a limit to spanking. we, the terror sisters were caned on the back of our calves, since we would always be running away, hence back turned towards parent. spanking is supposed to be a deterrent. even the terror sisters calmed down and behaved when faced with the cane. but I can imagine the horror of some parents at the thought of caning their children. my poor parents. but in all seriousness, the pain is not that much different from what we the terror sisters would inflict on each other when fighting. we even got bruises from pinching each other. anyway, I believe that disciplining your child by hitting their palms or caning their palms, legs is not really that terrible. it is an effective way of getting unruly kids to behave. of course it is different with brute force that consitutes abuse and terrorizing the kids. I remember when a bunch of us were once hit on the palm with a ruler by a teacher. that caused some uproar in school as teachers really shouldn't hit their students!! for a country that prides it self as a free country, surely this invasion of privacy must not be tolerated. after all I'm sure all of us can tell the difference between discipline and abuse. what doesn't kill you will only make you stronger. (yes, that last line was said in jest)
